Christmas is BIG in our house, as you can imagine. I love all things cozy and nostalgic. Adding a super chunky crochet Christmas stocking to my décor is a must! (sorry the name in a bit of a mouthful).
It is the ultimate cozy stocking. It radiates cottage core feel. I just recently realized my home is decorated this way, making it so comforting. The way a home should be in any style you enjoy.
This Christmas crochet pattern makes a large soft stocking using a super bulky yarn. It is a fast and easy pattern, and simple enough to add your own customizations like a name, initial, applique or custom charms.
Crochet it for yourself, make multiple to hang on your mantle as a family stocking, or give it as a Christmas gift or holiday gift to a spouse or partner, friends, family, or anyone special in your life.
This stocking works great as a last minute gift as well, stitch it up in an evening!

Yarn for the Crochet Christmas Stocking
Wool Ease thick & quick by Lion Brand Yarns is the ultimate cozy yarn. It is a perfect blend of acrylic and wool, and better yet it’s machine washable and dryable! There are so many cozy colors to choose from. The colors I chose for the sample stocking are Kale and Oatmeal. Both have neutral color flecks in them. I recently painted my living room and dining room in hunter green, and I have lots of wood, so this color combination fits nicely.
You only need 2 balls in total, one for each color (one for the toe, heel and flap, and another for the body). You could also make this stocking in one solid color, just make sure to buy 2 balls from the same dye lot.
Yarn Substitutions
Any super bulky yarn should work up the same way – such as Cozy Wool by Loops & Threads, or Bernat Softee Chunky.
Crochet Hook Required
The Wool Ease thick & quick calls for a 9.00mm hook, however I feel going down to an 8.00mm makes the stocking a little more solid. Ready for all those goodies on Christmas Eve!
Additional Supplies Required
- tapestry needle
- scissors
- charms
- I have added a pine cone and berries, ties to the loop with some natural colored jute / twine cord
- get creative! Add a name charm in wood or beads, some pom poms or a bow
Final Sizing
With the recommended yarn, the final piece will be approximately 7” x 19” (18cm x 48cm). I feel it’s perfect for a stocking, ready for all the goodies!
Abbreviations
My pattern is written in North American terminology (see my pdf for conversions)
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
ss = slip stitch
sj = seamless join (this replaces a traditional slip stitch) *
dc = double crochet
sdc = standing double crochet **
hdc = half double crochet
mm = millimeter
cm = centimeter
in = inch
st = stitch
inc = increase (aka
dec = decrease (aka sc2tog for single crochet)
*seamless join transforms any crochet in the round, making the join nearly invisible, especially with bulky yarn
**standing double crochet is another awe inspiring stitch, going hand in hand with the seamless join this makes your lines disappear

Christmas Stocking Crochet Pattern
This pattern is constructed in rounds from the toe up to the heel to start. New yarn is then joined in for the heel, and crocheted in rows, turning at each row. You will need to hand stitch up the sides of the heel together. Continue on with the body in rounds, incorporating the loop for hanging, and then join in the flap color to continue to the end.
